Sentient created the topic: CPL MTOW

My question is what is the highest MTOW you are allowed to fly as the holder of a CPL?

61.570 (a) (ii) if the holder has less than 750 hours of flight time as pilot of an aeroplane - an aeroplane certificated for single pilot operation with a maximum certificated take of weight for more than 5700 kg in an air transport operation…

This wording suggests that with greater than 750 hours you can fly an aeroplane with more than 5700kg. I think the answer is 8618kg but I don’t know where that is written or even if it’s correct. Any help is appreciated!

Hi Sentient,

Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998 States:

61.570 Privileges of commercial pilot licences
Subject to Subpart 61.E and regulation 61.575, the holder of a commercial pilot licence is authorised:
(a) to pilot, as pilot in command, any aircraft in any operation, other than:
(i) a multi-crew aircraft in an air transport operation; or
(ii) if the holder has less than 750 hours of flight time as a pilot of an aeroplane—an aeroplane certificated for single-pilot operation with a maximum certificated take-off weight of more than 5,700 kg in an air transport operation; or
(iii) if the holder has less than 750 hours of flight time as a pilot of a rotorcraft—a rotorcraft with a maximum certificated take-off weight of more than 3,175 kg in an air transport operation; and
(b) to pilot, as co-pilot, any aircraft in any operation.

As per the above regulations, once you exceed the 750 hours of flight time in an aeroplane, you may operate (single pilot certified) aircraft heavier than 5,700kg (engaged in air transport operations) as pilot in command. There is no maximum weight specified.

However you cannot act as PIC if the aircraft is a multi-crew aircraft in air transport operation.

Note that you can pilot, as copilot, in any aircraft any operation with a CPL.

Hope this helps!

Harry
