Hi,
I am really struggling with air law. After 5 exams already this is by far the most difficult. I just can’t seem to work out how to study it.
But then adding to my frustration is when I come across error or perceived errors…
Question 10 in chapter 1: how many times you say Mayday and the Callsign.
I picked answer B, mayday 3 times, then call sign once. This is shown in the ersa emergencies and the aip. But the answer in the book is A.
This is not the only mistake or issue I’m having but just finding it impossible to study then getting thrown curve balls to try figure out.
I still think it’s B, not A . Does someone care to explain otherwise?

Simon, we do our best to keep up with the ever revolving door of CASA Legislation, however the second we go to print things change. The biggest advice I can give you is don't try and learn the law, but learn where to find it quickly. CASA exams department know what is changing in advance and adjust the exam questions accordingly, whereas we find out after the amendment is published.
To answer your question
A "MAYDAY" transmission is used whenever the aircraft and its occupants are threatened by grave and imminent danger and/or require immediate assistance. AIP GEN 3.4-28 para 6.2 refers.
The closest answer in the current text would be "C" as the June 2025 amendment wants MAYDAY 3 times then the Station being addressed.
MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY "BRISBANE CENTER" VICTOR HOTEL MIKE BRAVO FOXTROT ...intentions position any useful information.
Most current pilots still wouldn't know this is a current change but it was implemented to bring Australia inline to the ICAO standard.
