FlyingThereAndBack created the topic: Systemic Countermeasure

On page 10.18 of the Bob Tait HUF book, it states that a Systemic Countermeasure is built into the aircraft systems, ie. Stall warning etc.

Question 10 in section 10 asks, 'Regularly practicing forced landings would be an example of:'
And the correct answer given is 'A planning countermeasure employed to manage an unexpected threat.'

However on the erata web page it states:
"Page 10.23 Question No. 10: answer option (a) should read "a systemic countermeasure employed to manage an unexpected threat". Regular training is an example of a systemic countermeasure and not a planning countermeasure."

This correction has confused me :/

This correction came about after discussions on the finer points of Systemic versus Planning countermeasures. The consensus was, Systemic countermeasures are those countermeasures built into the aircraft and operator's system of operations.

Stall warnings etc are examples of systemic countermeasures but they are not the only examples. Other countermeasures such as SOPs, training etc are also part of the operator's system of safety management and are also examples of systemic countermeasures..

Planning countermeasures on the other hand relate to the actual flight about to occur and are applied on the ground before take-off.

Practising forced landings is something you do to keep yourself up to speed on emergency procedures in case they are required on some future flight. They are part of the operator's (or your personal) system of training/recency.

Cheers,

Rich
