Hi Bob,

In your IREX book July 2011, CIR revision questions- Set 3 question 2, I chose B as my answer to actions when flying IFR into a radar environment and microphone becomes unserviceable - your answer was E. I am not clear on why E is correct over B, can you please advise?

B - Transmit 4 separate and distinct unmodulated transmissions of one second duration
E - squawk 7600, transmit 4 separate and distinct unmodulated transmissions of one second duration

According to AIP ENR 1.6 para 6.4.3. at anytime when two-way radio communication is not possible in CTA, the transponder must be set to 7600. Notice that it doesn't say that the radio itself has failed, it says two-way communication is not possible. Therefore if you are unable to communicate due to a microphone failure, two-way communication would not be possible even if the radio had not failed. You should set 7600 on the transponder as well as the four transmissions,
