jcwagadoo created the topic: VOR intercepts

My questions relate to VOR exercise 14, questions 31 through 36. I must be missing something but how is one to determine whether the aircraft is inbound of outbound to the aid, thus determining the the magnetic bearing to or from the station. for example in question 31 the aircraft is to the right of the 240 radial. If the aircraft was outbound the bearing from the station would be 248. if it was inbound, the bearing from would be 232. the answer is the latter but how do you rule out the former?

Hi jc,

You need to remember the VOR receiver in the aircraft indicates your position in relation to the radial selected on the OBS and the display is independent of your heading. You could be heading in any direction and the indication would still be the same. Check out the diagrams on page 1.66 of the textbook to get a better idea.

Cheers,

Rich
