Alternate Requirements

Aviatordan created the topic: Alternate Requirements

Hey guys,

Just a quick one out of curiosity. Do all aerodromes (for the sake of this argument all aerodromes with a single runway) that have a ground based instrument approach procedure have one for both runway directions? I.e. Bundaberg has an NDB for both runways 14 & 32. Would you ever find that an aerodrome with a single runway would only have an approach for one direction, e.g if Bundaberg only had one for runway 14 and not 32?

If so, with regards to alternate requirements, what if the wind is forecast to be strongly favouring one direction, which is the direction that doesn't have an approach procedure?

Cheers,

Dan

If you flew the approach to the circling minima there is nothing to stop you from carrying out a circling approach to land on the other runway once you become visual. Otherwise you would need an alternate. There may be cases where only one runway direction is served by an approach, however it would be an unusual circumstance.
