Hi bob.
I’m just wondering about flight planning section, for an alternate aerodrome which one is to choose, For example. If I’m flying from Strahan to king island, which aerodrome more suitable for an alternate, Smith, or Wynyard, Devonport or and George Town. Is it any rules regarding choosing, as I haven’t seen much on the book p3.3
It's up to the pilot to select a suitable alternate. The only thing the AIP has to say about it is that, for it to be a suitable alternate, it must be a suitable destination for the flight and it must not itself require an alternate. (ENR 1.1 para 11.8.1.2)
To be a suitable destination, it must be an aerodrome that would comply with all of the landing requirements that apply to your aircraft and the flight to that aerodrome must not require any irregular operation. In other words, you can't nominate an alternate that would require you to declare an emergency to go there.

This question came up in my recent IREX attempt
It gave me all those options it did not give any OPR for Wx or Lighting as it was an IFR flight that needed an alt from king island but did not give anything else...
I chose the closest being Smithton
However,
I neglected to note ENR1.1 10.7
- it has no IAP, no GND based aids, (it was day) but no available forecast was given so does (10.7.1.3) count?
Regarding this, I have a question on forecasts and alternates.
For example, in the mini test on page 171 / 172.
Question 3 and 4 are for plans to Port Pirie and Balranald.
Neither Port Pirie nor Balranald have TAF's issued, so there is no aerodrome forecast.
Therefore regardless of what the GAF says, per 10.7.1.3, an alternate must be planned for is what I have been led to believe?
