Richardson created the topic: Nav aid/ alternate

Gday Bob,

Just a question regarding the requirement for an alternate.

If you are flying IFR CHTR to a destination by day, served by RNAV(gnss) only. Your aircraft if fitted with 1ADF 2VOR and 1GNSS receiver. If there are no OPR’s for weather, do you require an alternate?

Refer AIP ENR 1.1 para 11.7.3.1 pg 93
And 11.7.3.1 pg 94

This flight has 1 approach and 1 receiver so it doesn’t meet the requirements of 11.7.3.1. However, the aerodrome isn’t served by a radio navigation aid, so as long as cloud is not more than SCT below LSALT plus 500ft, and vis 8km or better, you could conduct this flight without the requirement of an alternate.

Is that correct? Or is an RNAV approach considered to be a radio navigation aid? In which case you would require either an additional gnss receiver or a ground based aid.
