Just trying to figure out where the 90 nautical miles comes from in the answer explanation? Finding irex pretty dry so there's a fair chance that I haven't read something thoroughly enough again.

90 nm is the rated coverage of VHF aids if you are above 5000ft. You cannot claim a fix unless you are within the rated coverage. See AIP GEN 1.5 para 2.3.

Two requirements must be met when planning a route using ground-based navigation aids.
1. Not more than 2 hours between positive fixes.
2. Distance from last positive fix to the destination not more than 6.39 times the rated coverage of the destination aid.
