TAF3 and Holding Fuel

If a TAF3 is valid from 280300Z. Your arrival is 280530Z and there is a TEMPO 2803/2806 that requires holding fuel are you required to carry the 60 minutes holding fuel or only need to carry 30 minutes due to it being inside the first 3 hours of the TAF3?

Thanks

Hi Anthony

Tempo is always Tempo so 60 minutes is required whether TAF3 or not. - I am giving references from the AIP ENR 1.1-79

The 30 minute reference in TAF3 applies to the 30 minute buffers around a weather requirement see paras 10.7.2.7 and 10.7.2.8, which are not required in the first three hours of a TAF3 - see para 10.7.2.9 (a). From the forecast that you have listed, there is no requirement for the 30 minute buffer before the TEMPO starting at 2803.

Also as per para 10.7.2.9 (b) where the Tempo period in that TAF3 does not specify either reduced visibility due fog 10.7.2.1.(c) or
PROB30 or PROB 40 for TS, then the TEMPO MUST be carried, or an Alternate.

Clear as MUD??

Thanks Wayne!

I guess my question to that is can’t you just carry the amount of fuel to hold until that TEMPO ends (30 minutes from ETA)? I think this comes under ENR1.1 para 10.7.2.8. Also is it correct there is no buffer on the end of the TEMPO as the TEMPO ends on the first 3 hours?

Hi Anthony,

Sorry I misread the question a bit. I have never come across this scenario before where a weather requirement ends when the 3 hour period for a TAF3 expires.

I cannot find any guiding material in the AIP except on ENR 1.10-2 para 1.2.4 which states that the forecast must be valid for a period 30 minutes before and 60 minutes after the planned ETA. So in your question, unless a new TAF3 is issued starting at 2806/2900, it would mean treating the TAF as not a TAF3, and carry the weather requirements as normal. The TAF3 3 hour period does not cover the 60 minutes after your ETA. TEMPO (60 minutes) or sufficient fuel to hold until 280630, or carry suitable alternate is the fuel required.

That is my interpretation so I hope that helps.

This question has intrigued me so much that I thought a time line presentation would help clarify the best way to look at it.
