Second time’s the charm! Did a lot more of the Bob Tait textbook this time, and read the book back to front and vice versa too many times.
I felt a lot more prepared this time round. 4 2 markers, 30 questions, 34 marks in total if i remember correctly.
TAFs were a lot trickier this time round. There were a couple of questions regarding the TAF that you had to take into account FM / BECMG validity periods (30 before, 60 after)
Also regarding TAF3s, whereby PROB30s don’t apply 3 hours from the beginning of a TAF3, so no alternate required
I’ve regurgitated a couple of notable questions that seem to be brand new questions rolled out by ASPEQ.
1. Where is the rotor zones in respect to the lenticular clouds?
- above the crest of the waves
- below the crest of the waves
- in the trough of the waves (answered this)
- something i don’t remember but definitely not right
2. another question was the difference between TAF / TAF3
- 3 hours for TAF3, 6 hours for TAF
- TAF3 supersedes TAF during TAF3’s validity period (answered this)
- two other options that i didn’t remember but wasn’t right
3. There was also another question regarding what happens when cumulus (?) clouds turned into stratocumulus
- subsistence inversion (answered this)
- surface inversion (?)
- cold front
- occluded front
4. in winter, which way do the winds blow in the Australian tropic east coast
- East
- West
- North Easternly
- South Easternly (answered this because winter = low = clockwise)
5. At an australian coastal aerodrome, at what time will a land breeze be strongest?
- just before sunrise (answered this)
- midnight
- midday
- after sunset
- always

Question 1 : Where is the rotor zones in respect to the lenticular clouds?
Answer: Below the crest of the waves. The rotor cloud will typically be directly below the lenticular cloud.
Question 2 : what is the difference between TAF / TAF3
Answer : 3 hours for TAF3, 6 hours for TAF
Question 3 : What happens when cumulus (?) clouds turned into stratocumulus?
Answer : Surface inversion
Surface inversion / temperature inversions, occur when a layer of cool air is trapped near the ground by warmer air above.
Cumulus clouds can turn into stratocumulus clouds when they flatten due to wind shear or temperature inversion..
Question 4 : In winter, which way do the winds blow in the Australian tropic east coast. ( Trick question ) because 2 is right.
Answer : In winter, the winds on the Australian tropical east coast blow from the ( EAST ) or southeast.
If you were wrong with southeast, then answer is East..
Question 5 : At an Australian coastal aerodrome, at what time will a ( land breeze ) be strongest?
Awnser : Land breezes are most intense around 6 AM and continue until midmorning. They are caused by the land cooling faster than the ocean at night, which creates a lower air pressure over the water.
