Load questions - fuel stated as 'at start up' or 'at take-off'

Hello There,

I am doing the online practice exams and I can see two similar questions one with different argument and the other one with different.

In question number 3 All fuel is used including taxi fuel to calculate maximum cargo that maybe loaded which is fair enough.

In question number 11 however, taxi fuel has been deducted.

what is the difference in both the questions as they are both asking for maximum amount of cargo to be loaded and none mentioning at take off or startup

Hi Nixor

Can you please post Question no 3 so that we can compare?

Re question No 11, we consider that the start up/taxy fuel is burnt before Take Off, so that is another 8 kg of Cargo that can be added. I get an answer of 560Kgs of Cargo.

Nixor,

Thanks for posting the question where it simply states fuel at Take-Off.

Care is needed with these type of load questions as the fuel can be stated as either "at start up" or at "Take-Off". The examiner may even include additional items which are superfluous to the question, just to confuse.

Hi WayneJ/Nixor, isn't the point about "question 3" which is the QUESTION section in BLUE .... that is does NOT state either (at start up or at take-off' ...

RATHER, it is ONLY the answer in the BEIGE section, which includes the information that it should 'at take-off' ?

(That is, the question could be more helpful, like it is in the original question 11 at top in the blue question section.)

Again fallen for the trap, the big difference here is the use of "Trip Fuel Q3" and "Fuel at Startup Q11" if you have a look at your flight plan form. What is Trip fuel ?
Trip fuel means the amount of fuel required to enable an aircraft to fly from any point along a route until landing at a destination aerodrome including (as applicable) the following:
a. fuel for take-off and climb from departure aerodrome elevation to initial cruising level or altitude, taking into account the expected departure routing;
b. fuel for cruise from top of climb to top of descent, including any step climb or descent;
c. fuel from top of descent to the point where the approach is initiated, taking into account the expected arrival procedure; d. fuel for executing an approach and landing at the planned destination aerodrome

You need to be 100% on your fuel definitions not just for the theory exams but also for your PPL or CPL flight test. As a Flight examiner CASA wants us to Fail instantly anyone not 100% aware of these fuel definitions.
Print a copy of AC 91-15 and keep it next to your toilet, read it every day.

This is the current hot topic in the training of the next generation of pilots because pilots still insist on running out of fuel.
