Hi everyone,
CFPA - Fuel caluclation rouding related.
I'm looking for some input regarding fuel calculations, specifically when to round up or down.
I have noticed in Bob Tait CFPA book's page 103 where calcuated trip fuel 32.2 gallons was rounded up to 33 gallons, but on another same question 58.33 gallons was rounded down to 58 gallons. .. Please see the attached photos..

Could someone please explain the rules or conventions for rounding fuel figures during the CFPA exam, especially if CASA does not clearly instruct on how to round a figure, for example, to the next whole number
especially for calculations that might be presented as 'type-in' questions by CASA? I want to ensure I'm applying the correct rounding method.
Thanks in advance for your help!"

Hi Nick123,

On CASA's website, they recommend that the decimal point is kept in the calculations until the final answer where you will be required to enter a whole number. Check the wording of the question, whether it says "nearest whole number" or "nearest appropriate number".

Those questions on page 103 of the text book (exercise 4.15) have been corrected with a decimal answer, and the final answer rounded up. That is from my online electronic copy of the text book.

An additional comment - make full use of your calculator's accumulator (memory) function. Saves lots of effort and carries the calculation through intermediate steps with full architecture precision.
