I just bought the PPL study guide (issue 14) and after a few minutes flicking through the pages stopped at the questions on page 4.27
Q1 puzzled me - Re: VFR may operate in Class D airspace without airways clearance
The facing page has a table where under D there is a Yes indicating clearance IS required

A clearance is required but, strictly speaking. it's not really an airways clearance. AIP ENR 1.1 para 3.1 Note 2, says that if a VFR aircraft is to operate entirely within the Class D airspace and not in the overlying Class C airspace above, the pilot advises the tower of his intentions and an acknowledgment of that transmission from the tower constitutes a clearance to operate in Class D airspace.
