"Stability in pitch - longitudinal stability".

Hi,

I'm really confused. Pg 377 discusses stability in pitch (Longitudinal stability) and the importance of the arm from the CoG to the CoP. But this is surely stability in the LATERAL axis - ie. the pitching axis? (the longitudinal axis being the rolling axis).

The axes are described like this in the RPL pg 15

Am i going mad? Or just missing something really obvious?

After thinking this through a bit harder - although e.g a plane pitches around the lateral axis, when we are talking about longitudinal stability, we are considering the aircraft in a longitudinal plane (ie. nose to tail) rather than the lateral axis about which it pivots?

Is this right?

THanks again for any help.

You are spot on! I couldn't have put it any better myself. Longitudinal stability is stability in the pitching plane. That is stability nose to tail.
