There are two approaches to be considered.
(a) the OEM is the appropriate authority on the Type (at least until the Industry gains a lot of experience with the aircraft) so the OEM information in the POH (for a light aircraft) will include relevant daily checks to be done. As an aside, the POH for light aircraft includes the AFM. For heavy aircraft, there is a separate AFM document.
(b) in addition, CASA publishes generic information in CARs which may be used if you don't have any specific OEM schedules to follow or have nominated to use the CAR document requirements.
In practice, one refers to both to get a broader overview of what's what.
There is other stuff hidden in the rules but what I have linked to should give you a good idea of what's what. As a pilot, just be VERY careful that you are acting in compliance with the operator's requirements if you propose to do any maintenance.

it doesn't specify which of the 2 is a better instructional souce for the initial inspection.
Looking at the POH/AFM, the typical pilot should consider both documents to be much the same. For any given Type, there will only be either a POH, or AFM. The POH includes the AFM and is more commonly seen in the light aircraft field where the AFM is not overly big and the GA pilot, typically, is interested in the ancillary OEM information.
For the larger aircraft, typically, we have the AFM as a separate document and another document, usually styled as an operations or operating manual. Both tend to be rather large documents.
So far as the question posed in your initial post is concerned, it is a bit silly for the examiner to pose alternatives as POH and AFM. Probably, presuming that the question is looking at the light aircraft arena, the appropriate answer is POH as that has been the typical document since the GAMA Spec 1 proforma came on the marketplace. However, any required information will be in the AFM or AFM parts of the POH.

Thanks John, it was a question that was asked. I dont have a problem if they had stated that in order to prepare for the exam, that I had to read GAMA Spec 1 preforms ! but seeing that this was not the case, I chose AFM as I thought AFM was more appropriate in its finer details.
Its a stupid question and not one that relates to flying on a day to day basis and further to this,
not one that your student pilot will have any knowledge of in a general sense.
