Hi Bob,
Your books are great, I bought them all
I am confused about an update to page 5.7 of the air law book... Question 12
"The limitation imposed by CARs on turns on to final approach is that the turn shall..."
IN THE UPDATE YOU HAVE THE ANSWER AS "(C) Be completed by 500ft AGL"
Whereas before the answer was (C)Permit a straight in approach of at least 500m from the perimeter of the aerodrome"
You give CAR 166(f) As a reference which doesn't seem to exist.
That's a good question. I have been onto CASA about this. As you say, the latest CAR doesn't have such a reference so that's no help. When I spoke to CASA they said they are using the old CAR!! I said what about the version you download from the web and they seemed to be a bit evasive, but the impression I got was that CASA consider that version isn't official - which I find incredible!!
In the material given out by the CASA in the recent workshops on non-towered airports, it does say 500 feet. However CASA point out that that is only advice not a law. So I would say that there is no specific requirement for turns onto final any more - I simply don't agree that the current CAR on their web site is invalid!
There should be no questions on that topic in a law exam and I'll be interested to hear from anyone who finds one...
By the way, you will find the reference to 500 feet in CAAP 166-1(0) Page 10 para 4.5.

Dear Bob,
I will be sitting for my casa airlaw exam on Friday and i am studying your books. As you have mention that casa told you the updated CAR are not valid and what about the CAO?
Should I take the old CAR and CAO for the exam on friday or the new CAR and CAO?
I suggest you stick to the new [current] CAR. The only issue seems to be the bit about turning onto final. I simply don't accept that the on-line version of the CAR is not valid. The CAO is not affected in any way so use the current CAO. Good luck with the exam and please let me know how you go.
Not to complicate matters but my latest printed copy of CAR 1988 is dated April 2010 which was a completely reprinted/reformatted version from CASA. As Bob said the latest PDF versions from the
Attorney General's ComLaw site
must be valid and it was already in force from the 3rd June. (This is the new version without reference to the 500 ft rule).
So my question is, does anyone already have that 3rd June version in print or is AirServices still a bit behind in shipping the update?
So which copies of the CAO's / CAR's / CAAP's should we be using?
Has CASA updated their questions to include the new updated regulations?
Is it also necessary to take the full volume of CAR's into the exam? or may we take photocopied extracts of the 'relevant' parts? in which case, which parts should we take? I was speaking with someone who did the CPL exams in Melbourne and they were given photocopied extracts to use. (makes it easier looking for stuff, I guess!)
They were also told which part of the CAO's to download and print off for use in the exam.

This is a bit late & don't want to detract from zulugurl's question
I got 98%. Got a question wrong with flight & duty times - I must have overlooked something.
The exam was very straight forward with no surprises or trick questions. I had all the texts. I have since received in the mail the updates to CAR. I didn't get a question about turning onto final 500m/500ft
While I'm at it here are my other results
Aerodynamics - 90%
Meteorology - 95%
Human Performance - 95%
Performance - 96%
Air Law - 98%
AGK - 98%
Navigation - 100%
PPL - 98%
Used Bob Tait books for everything - Top quality product and a great read! Thanks Bob
The CAAP will not be necessary in the exam since the only thing you need is the fuel reserves - 45 mins for a fixed reserve and 15% variable reserve if it is a charter flight. If you go through the book and make a note of the parts of the CAR and CAO that are mentioned as references, you will have a good idea of the requirements for the exam. Personally I think it would be best to take the complete documents into the exam with the relevant sections earmarked or highlighted. If you would prefer to take in a copy of those CARs that will be needed, you will find that only a few CARs are mentioned in the book so they would be the ones to copy.
The issue of the turn onto final is now resolved in the latest AIP. The turn should be completed by 500 ft AGL [AIP ENR 1.1 para 47.5.6].
